Firm News & Web ChangesThis is where we'll announce the most recent news about the firm and additions to this site. If you've visited before and want to know what's changed, take a look here first. Happy birthday to LOTMB! April 4, 2008, Briarcliff Manor, New York: Today is the fourth anniversary of my solo practice. (Just two more years and I'll have outrun the statute of limitations for breach of contract claims against my former firm. Hooray!) Going Mac! March 3, 2008, Briarcliff Manor, New York: Just replaced my aging Dell laptop with a maxed-out Macbook Pro. So far, I like it. There's a learning curve involved, and it will take me a while to be as comfortable and productive in OSX as I am in a pure Windows environment, but that day will come. I'm running both OS 10.5 (Leopard) and my most frequent Windows programs, courtesy of VMWare's "Fusion," an operating system virtualization program. (I just hope I never become one of those self-righteous Mac zealots. For me, it's a computer, a tool; not a religion.) "Coverage News" page selected as a "Top Blog" at the LexisNexis Insurance Law Center September 12, 2007, Briarcliff Manor, New York: My Coverage News page has been selected for inclusion in the "Top Blogs" section of the LexisNexis Insurance Law Center. Lexis says:
New "Lawyering @ Home" Page August 5, 2007, Briarcliff Manor, New York: I have added a new page to this site: Lawyering @ Home (extra link also in banner, above). It's about, uh...well, lawyering at home. Mainly, it presents useful advice, coaching, and cheerleading for anyone -- lawyer or non-lawyer -- thinking about leaving the corporate rat-race and working out of a home office. I intend to update it as the spirit moves me, so check back often. LOTMB deploys dual monitor set-up August 3, 2007, Briarcliff Manor, New York: "Once you start using two monitors, you'll never want to go back." Having heard clients tell me that for the past couple of months, I finally decided to try it for myself. It's pretty neat, all right, and very easy to set up. Too early to tell yet whether it will change my life in any substantial way, but it definitely has a pretty good "gee-whiz" factor. Happy birthday to LOTMB! April 4, 2007, Briarcliff Manor, New York: Hard to believe, but today is the third anniversary of the firm's founding. I've said it before and I'm happy to say it again: sincere thanks to each and every one of you who have made the past two years as wonderful and rewarding as they have been (you know who you are). Happy birthday to LOTMB! April 4, 2006, Briarcliff Manor, New York: Today is the second anniversary of the firm's founding. Once again, sincere thanks to each and every one of you who have made the past two years as wonderful and rewarding as they have been (you know who you are). Firm deploys Smartphone March 27, 2006, Briarcliff Manor, New York: I have begun using a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone instead of a cell phone. In addition to being the clearest-sounding cell phone I have ever had, this device lets me surf the Web, and receive and respond to e-mail, in any Verizon service area in the United States. Having this sort of "convergence device" means I no longer have to carry both a Pocket PC and a cell phone: this one device does it all. It also means I can stay in touch and be just as responsive to clients, even when away from the office. For those interested in tech details, the specific model I am using is a UTStarcom XV6700, running on Verizon's nationwide EVDO network. Tom Bower speaks at NYSBA CLE Seminar April 15, 2005, Briarcliff Manor, New York: On April 15, 2005, Tom Bower participated in a round-table discussion of ethical issues confronting defense counsel in the representation of insureds. The discussion was part of a Continuing Legal Education program on issues in personal lines insurance coverage, presented under the auspices of the New York State Bar Association. You can find a copy of the written materials for Tom's talk here. Law Office of Thomas M. Bower celebrates first birthday April 4, 2005, Briarcliff Manor, New York: Today is the first anniversary of the firm's founding. Sincere thanks to each and every one of you who have made this past year as wonderful and rewarding as it has been (you know who you are). Law Office of Thomas M. Bower deploys Mirra Personal Server March 2, 2005, Briarcliff Manor, New York: The firm has deployed the Mirra Personal Server on its network. The Mirra automatically backs-up and synchronizes data on each of the firm's networked computers. It also allows remote access to files through a password-protected, secure Web portal. Finally, it enables the firm to make selected files available to selected clients on-line, in password-protected Web folders.
May 21, 2004, Briarcliff Manor, New York: The firm has begun implementation of the "paper-LESS"™ office system. Under this system, most paper documents are scanned and stored digitally, in a searchable, editable format. Paper originals are archived or discarded, as appropriate, but seldom need to be used. This enhances efficiency, improves response time, and reduces clients' costs, by dramatically reducing time spent filing, retrieving, and re-filing paper documents.
May 7, 2004, Briarcliff Manor, New York: As part of its disaster recovery strategy, the firm has arranged for daily off-site back-ups of critical computer data. Such back-ups are secure, encrypted, and stored in off-site commercial servers. They are in addition to, not instead of, local back-ups on removable media.
May 7, 2004, New York, New York: Tom was a speaker at the New York State Bar Association's CLE seminar on Mold: A Comprehensive Primer on Claims and Litigation in New York. The well-attended seminar was in Midtown Manhattan and included a number of very good speakers. Tom's topic was third-party liability coverage for mold claims. You can download Tom's seminar handout in *.pdf format here. For attendees' comments on Tom's presentation, go here.
April 4, 2004, Briarcliff Manor, New York: If you are reading this, then you already know that!
April 4, 2004, Briarcliff Manor, New York: After practicing law in Midtown Manhattan law firms since 1980, Tom Bower today began private practice as a sole practitioner in bucolic Briarcliff Manor, New York. |
